Best Friends

This is the story of our dog Rook and his new best friend.

One day, my husband and I were wandering along the wetland's edge when we noticed a very young deer standing near the water. Despite the fact that her mother was most likely nearby, our four-year-old shepard-husky mix, Rook, approached her. The two of them met and began to play, darting about, taking turns chasing the other, stopping, smelling, and then simply hanging out.

After 20 minutes, we weren't sure how this impromptu playdate would end. We called Rook away from the deer, and the deer went back to the wetland tributary and laid low in the grass until her mother returned.

That morning was their only playdate. But with so many deer bedding down and eating through the farm's planted and wild forage, we imagine one of them is her growing up. We'll see if they meet again.
